So, what is Single Origin?
Let’s start at the beginning. ‘French Oak’ is a blanket term for Oak Trees grown in France, of which there are two main species: Quercus Robur and Quercus Petraea. We import Quercus Robur.
So, why French Oak?
When we’re talking quality, French is the best there is. Its tight grain, high tannin content and cathedral grain pattern make it the top tier product for architecture, joinery, flooring, furniture and wine barrels and is used time and time again where quality counts. In Australia, whether you reside in dry, warm, cold, humid or coastal climates - French Oak is unequivocally the most durable, workable, and beautiful product there is. When you’re looking for longevity, this is it.
The Single Origin of it all
I’ll cut to the chase, Single Origin specifically relates to geography. Our species (Quercus Robur) is from the Burgundy region, which is from sustainably managed forests, comes with a Chain of Custody and is PEFC (certified). This means that character remains uniform across all of our timber. It’s the real deal.
What sets our product apart from other businesses selling French Oak?
In Australia, majority of “French Oak” on the market which is grown in China, which oftentimes it is the same species (Quercus Robur).
Now you’re thinking; if it’s the same species then, what’s the difference?
In France it can be grown slowly, using centuries of selective forestry methodology (dating back to 14th Century), they have practices which promote forest ecology and growth, so that when they do fell mature trees, the forest is growing, not diminishing. In France, trees are grown in the best climate and soil for the tree - resulting in the tight grain, without this climate the grain is wider, quality is less and character is no longer uniform.
